Protecting older adults from being financially exploited
Financial exploitation of older adults is a growing concern, as scammers and unscrupulous individuals increasingly target seniors due to factors like social isolation, cognitive decline and trust in others. Bank accounts being depleted through stolen identity, seniors being coaxed by fraudulent phone calls from fake charities, people knocking on the door wanting to move in with their family to take care of the seniors living alone – we have heard it all from clients and families we have cared for. A few clients with dementia we cared for had men or women they met through social settings wanting to marry them, with relentless attempts. The consequences can be devastating – draining savings, damaging credit and eroding a sense of security. I remember the days we had to provide 24/7 care support for clients to safeguard the house so the fraudulent individuals could not come in to plead with their bogus love stories. Fortunately, there are practical steps to prevent this abuse and compassionate ways to support those who have already been affected.

[Amazingly caring, professional and reliable! My 93 yr old mother had a stroke and couldn’t even stand. She was just moving between the bed and chair, couldn’t make it to the bathroom even. Starlight came to the home and helped with lifting her spirits, grooming, meals and nourishment, tidying, and most importantly with encouraging and assisting with a set of exercises the doctor recommended.
Thanks to this care, within a couple months she is now fully ambulatory… can walk without a walker or cane! The visit reports online allowed us to know what was happening, and is a great relief to the family.
Highly recommended! Martin E., San Ramon, CA]
